Starbucks originated in Seattle, Washington opening its doors in 1971. The name came from the famous book Moby Dick, and refers to the traders who would have to face the dangerous oceans in order to acquire coffee. Ten years after opening, Howard Schultz, who is now the chairman and chief executive officer, had his first Starbucks experience. After a few sips of Sumatra, Schultz was hooked and started working for the company in 1982. In 1983, Schultz spent some time in Italy and realized he wanted the same atmosphere for coffee shops in the United States. Schultz left Starbucks for five years, before returning in 1987 with the assistance of investors. Starbucks’ mission is, “to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.”
